Ask the Expert: Hygienic Process Equipment
15/12/25
Adelphi Manufacturing’s Sales Director, Dean Willis, answers the industry’s most relevant questions on hygienic process equipment and filling technologies.
Which grade of stainless steel should I be looking for?
Pharma Hygiene Products Ltd (PHP) offers vessels and other process equipment in both 304 and 316L stainless steel:
- 304 stainless steel: 18% chromium, 8% nickel
- 316L stainless steel: 16% chromium, 10% nickel, 2% molybdenum
The molybdenum in 316L improves resistance to corrosion from chlorides and chlorine-based solutions. This makes it ideal for environments where salt exposure or strong corrosives are present.
- For mild acids or low-risk environments, 304 stainless steel is perfectly suitable.
- It can be difficult to distinguish 304 from 316L by eye, but PHP can provide full traceability and certification using an X-ray analyser, ensuring confidence in the material.
Is this cost-effective for my production requirements?
Investing in high-quality stainless steel pays off over time. Cheaper alternatives like plastic or lower-grade metals often become false economies, as they are less durable and less hygienic.
At Adelphi, many machine components are made from 304 stainless steel, while all ‘wetted’ parts—those that contact your product—are manufactured in 316L stainless steel. This approach balances cost-effectiveness with long-term performance.
Are there process equipment or machinery elements specifically designed to improve hygiene?
- Pit- and crevice-free design: Avoids “bug traps” in vessels and equipment
- Curved and sloping surfaces: Prevents product pooling and meets GMP requirements
- Non-drip nozzles: Controls product flow and minimizes contamination
- Quick-strip machines: Allow easy disassembly for thorough cleaning
These features ensure equipment and machinery remain hygienic and easy to maintain.
Are the hygienic equipment and machinery suitable for my industry?
