Adelphi Masterfil customer Greyland Chemicals is one of the UK’s leading cleaning chemical manufacturers, with a customer base extending throughout Europe. Their large warehouse and production facility in Greater Manchester operates as a thriving production hub, supported by four Adelphi Masterfil machines currently in use.
Greyland’s Engineering Manager, Russell Beaver, recently spoke with Adelphi Masterfil’s Northern Sales and Marketing team to discuss the long-standing relationship between the two companies.
A Relationship Built on Reliability
“Since I started in 1982 we’ve always used Masterfil machinery - they’re the Rolls-Royce of machines!” says Russell.
After outgrowing a previous hand-held capping solution, Greyland invested in a Mastercap Indexing Capping Machine in 2016. At the time, the company already had two Masterfil filling machines in operation - one of which has been running reliably since the 1980s.
This proven longevity, combined with a trusted and collaborative relationship with Adelphi Masterfil, played a key role in Russell’s purchasing decision.
A Complex Capping Challenge
Greyland’s application presented a number of technical challenges. The company uses round containers with angled necks, and the caps require accurate orientation before being applied.
With a strong engineering background - having hand-built the filling machine that preceded the Mastercap - Russell’s expectations were high:
“The machines need to be reliable - they’re our bread and butter. If they’re not working, we’re not making money.”
A Bespoke Mastercap Capping Solution
Adelphi Masterfil developed a bespoke solution tailored specifically to Greyland’s container and cap design. This included:
- A custom disc feeder mounted above the cap infeed chute
- A scissor grip mechanism to hold containers in the correct orientation during capping
This innovative mechanical solution removed the need for an expensive electronic orientation sensor.
“This saved us the cost of an expensive orientation sensor,” says Russell appreciatively. “It’s a great piece of kit.”
The Mastercap capping machine applies 36 caps per minute, delivering a significant productivity increase - so much so that Russell jokes: “Now my packer struggles to keep up!”
Shared Values and a Sustainable Outlook
Shared values further strengthen the relationship between Greyland Chemicals and Adelphi Masterfil.
