  • Changing perceptions; Women in Manufacturing

    June 26, 2018

[:en]EEF, the Manufacturers’ Organisation, has been voicing the concerns of many of its affiliated companies regarding “how to fill their skills gaps”, stating that “47% of manufacturers are either somewhat or very concerned about accessing the skills their business needs after Brexit”.

In the latest article from her blog, COO Caroline Gumble is extremely direct about how “girls and women are still a wellspring of talent that have not been fully tapped in the manufacturing sector”. The latest Office for National Statistics data shows that the gender split in manufacturing is currently 76% men and 24% women. But, states Gumble, “as an industry we hope to work to close this gap”.

At Adelphi we are celebrating our own women in manufacturing, including our recently promoted Associate Directors Nicola Jones and Samantha Oliver. Adelphi Group Chairman Stephen Holroyd and existing board members for the companies have expressed their pleasure to have a strong female presence on the board, which creates greater diversity in the senior management team for both Adelphi Coldstream and Adelphi Masterfil.

Gumble also states that “manufacturers are proactively nurturing the next generation of talent to fill skills gaps”, and argues that “there aren’t many manufacturers that don’t see the value in apprenticeships”. Research has shown that two-thirds of manufacturers plan to recruit an engineering apprentice in the next 12 months.

Always ahead of the game, apprenticeship schemes are greatly valued by Adelphi, and we love giving the opportunity for hands-on training and the development of practical working skills to the next generation of up-and-coming talent. We are pleased to have recently welcomed sales administration apprentice Chloe Emery, a former warehouse worker with a background in Business Studies, who is thriving in our team. Two other current employees, Lauren Valente and Joanna Armstrong, additionally began their careers as Adelphi apprentices, and are now working in Accounts and Sales Administration respectively.
